Presenter: Jeffrey Warren, GrassrootsMapping.org
Jeffrey Warren describes how GrassrootsMapping.org taught ordinary citizens to use balloons, kites, and other simple and inexpensive tools to produce their own aerial imagery of the recent Gulf Coast oil spill. The helped organize some of the data collecting flyovers, went out in fishing boats and walked along beaches to collect imagery with the generous assistance of the captains whose livelihoods are at stake. Driven by a belief in complete open access to spill imagery GrassrootsMapping.org esnures that all this documentation, which will be essential for environmental and legal use in coming years, is released into the public domain.
Presenters:Chrisoph Koettl, Amnesty International USA, & Susan Wolfinbarger, The American Association for the Advancement of Science
International human rights crises, like the armed conflicts in Darfur, Sri Lanka or northwestern Pakistan, are often characterized by lack of access and misinformation. Amnesty International USA and the American Association for the Advancement of Science will give insights into their ongoing cooperation in tackling some of these challenges by using geospatial technologies. The focus of the presentation will be on the most recent mapping project on northwestern Pakistan.

Presenter: Mike Geertsen, Founder & President, Depiction, Inc.
Depiction 1.2 is web-enabled desktop software that puts powerful GIS, simulation and collaboration tools in the hands of the individuals who know their communities best: residents, volunteers, employees and other everyday folks who are not computer or mapping experts. Depiction enables anyone to imagine, depict and share interactive geospatial scenarios – natural disasters, urban growth, logistical challenges and more.
This presentation will focus on crisis scenarios as it explores the key features of Depiction, from its online and offline simulation tools to its customization and real-time collaboration abilities.
